54-FI, Standard Chair, Inspired by Jean Prouvé (Sold in sets of 2)
Designed by Jean Prouvé in 1934, the Standard Chair is a defining expression of the French designer's belief that a chair should reveal the forces that give it structure. Rather than concealing its construction, Prouvé made the chair's engineering the central element of its design.
Dimensions
Overall: 18.5"W × 20.5"D × 31.5"H
Seat Height: 18.5"
The chair's distinctive rear legs, substantially stronger than the front legs, respond directly to the greater forces generated at the back of the chair. This simple yet ingenious structural principle gives the Standard Chair its unmistakable profile, while its carefully considered proportions provide comfort and support for everyday use.
Our interpretation draws from Prouvé's original design, combining its characteristic architectural silhouette with contemporary manufacturing techniques and carefully selected materials. Available in a range of finishes, the chair brings together sculptural form, structural clarity and the enduring appeal of French modernism.
More than a functional seat, the Standard Chair is a lesson in design made visible. Its strength, construction and purpose are all expressed through its form—an approach that has made it one of the most influential chairs of twentieth-century modern design.
The chair is constructed from a combination of formed steel and solid wood. Its characteristic rear legs are engineered to express the structural forces carried by the chair, while the front legs are formed from steel. The seat and backrest are carefully shaped for comfort and finished in the selected upholstery or material specification.
Our interpretation follows the essential proportions, structural logic and visual character of the original Standard Chair design by Jean Prouvé, while incorporating contemporary manufacturing techniques and carefully selected materials.
